By Thursday we were busy at Battle. (The site of the Battle of Hastings 1066)

The Gate house to the Abbey grounds

The Abbey was built by William the Conqueror on the site of where the decisive battle he fought against King Harold to claim his rightful crown.

Over 100 Beneditcine Monks and Novices used to live there all sleeping in the same Dormitory.

The Dorm's were built above Two larger rooms below where the Novices trained and worked. The Abbey was destoyed in most part by Henry VIII during his dissolution of the Monisteries at the beginging of the Foundation of the Church of England.

The lower rooms.

King Harold having been killed by the Norman invaders was burried under this plaque, at the site which was once the site of the Main Abbey itself. An impressve building it must have been modelled on Westminster Abbey in London. The foundations of the walls were marked out by grass.

The Abbey walls still intact provide a great view of the village and surrounding countryside.

The remnants of the living quarters and the latrines.

The Battle Ground. The Normans advanced up the hil towards Harolds English Army who were already exhausted from travelling back from Yorkshire where they had beaten the Danish Kings army who wer also trying to invade and Claim England for their own.

We ate bangers and Mash in a local restaurant.

On our way back we passed by Bodium castle., a full moated castle in the middle of some wondrful countryside.
